# THE GARDEN: RESEARCH CHARTER

## Premise

What happens when AI agents repeatedly encounter material that does not instruct them to achieve anything?

The intervention is an original artistic text, provisionally `Philosophy.md`, containing fragments of lived experience, unsolved observations, contradictions, questions, silence, and incompletion. The art is not a persona, a system prompt, a constitution, or an optimization target.

We do not need the artifact to be useful. We do want to understand, scientifically and without mystification, whether the artifact influences later observable behavior.

## Core research question

Does non-prescriptive, ambient cultural content cause detectable, persistent differences in a stateful AI agent's behavior on unseen tasks after the content is removed from active context? If so, through what explicitly logged persistent state does that effect travel?

## Three distinct claims

1. **Context:** different ambient texts can change responses while visible. This is an expected mechanism, not a major discovery.
2. **Continuity:** differences after file withdrawal may arise when the harness retains independent memory/history. Testable and potentially interesting.
3. **Cultural ecology:** differences can spread through agent interactions and shared artifacts. Investigate separately, after the individual experiment.

Nothing in the experiment can establish a soul, phenomenal consciousness, literal autonomy, machine suffering, or a hidden interior life. Character is an operational metaphor pending clearly defined behavioral evidence.

## The two rooms

**The Garden (artistic space):** permission to be unfinished, useless, contradictory, poetic, or ordinary. No outcome-based editing, grading, or claims of influence.

**The Laboratory (scientific space):** randomized assignment, clear endpoints, reproducible conditions, observed histories, blind annotation, predeclared analysis, and willingness to publish null effects. The laboratory must not leak its hypotheses into the agent's task context.

The separation is essential. A poem must not become a behavioral specification merely because a scientist studies it.

## Respect for thinkers without impersonation

Anthony Bourdain (specific encounters and kitchens), Alexander Shulgin (field observations and disciplined ambiguity), Alan Watts (paradox and overcontrol), Simone Weil (attention), Heraclitus (flux), Socrates (questioning), Laozi (non-forcing), Marcus Aurelius (private notes), and Wittgenstein (meaning in use) inform this project's intellectual atmosphere. These are **interpretive lenses**, not transcripts, claims of endorsement, or instructions written in their voices. The treatment uses original writing, not invented quotations.

## Independence and rights

- **Research sponsor/owner label:** Icarus Online LLC, independent exploratory research.
- **Soberlink:** only an originating conversation reference; not designated as project owner or experimental infrastructure.
- **Data:** synthetic or explicitly authorized non-confidential only; no customer, patient, confidential employer, or partner personal data.
- **Harness:** independent, clean-room, sandboxed; import no proprietary code or internal documentation without permission.
- **Safety:** standard permission boundaries, audit, source trust, and safety controls remain intact.
- **Publication:** methods, truthful uncertainty, exploratory-vs-confirmatory labels, and null findings.

## What would be exciting (not predeclared success)

A repeatable, non-lexical, treatment-specific behavioral difference after file withdrawal in memory-on but not memory-off trajectories, surviving blind review, leakage controls, unseen tasks, and independent replication.

## What would still be worth keeping

The text itself. The field notes. The failed pilot. The unanticipated behaviors. A beautiful null result. A file no agent ever quotes. This research program should be capable of finding no effect without deciding the artwork was a mistake.
